In 2015 a proposal was put forward by local carnivalites Kym Toms (Chairperson, Ilminster Carnival Committee) and Steve Dawe (Chairman, Harlequin Carnival Club) to see if a Carnival Park for Ilminster could be established and maintained, based on the model found in Glastonbury at Butler Park.
Carnival is a unique tradition in our area, yet many clubs are finding it increasingly difficult to build their entries due to a lack of available build homes. Whilst the South Somerset Federation of clubs have been successful in recent years on both the local and County Carnival circuits; we become ever more fearful that yet more of our clubs will be consigned to memory as so many already have.
Carnival touches the lives of very many people in and around Ilminster and has done for decades. Clubs range from fledgling family organisations to 100 strong, 40 plus year old established organisations. Participants are made up of all ages from the very young to the very old and from almost every background that the local community possesses.
It is our intention to identify the location, follow planning and highway guidance and of course raise the funds needed to achieve the end goal of a South Somerset Carnival Park.
